Out There with STKR: Conversations with Modern Day Outdoor Adventurers

An Interview with Jeff Coxen

Professional thrill-seeker, brew connoisseur, and most importantly, co-founder of the Rogue Element overlanding team fills us in on their incredible outdoor adventures! The Rogue Element crew set out in 2016 with a mission to “entertain, inspire and bring together all that love the outdoors.”

Traveling through the Owyhee Mountains, Hell’s Canyon, and Moab is just another average day for Jeff Coxen and the rest of the Rogue Element team. Adventure is along every trail for Jeff and the team!

Rogue Element began in 2016 as a passion project of sorts for Jeff and the rest of the team. They decided to fill the void of films that touch every aspect of outdoor adventures. From overland expeditions to fly fishing, to extreme sports to hiking, this team covers it all! That idea has transformed into social media accounts packed with adventures and comedy and a successful YouTube series, Divergent Pathways, that can also be found on Prime Video.

STKR was able to get a bit of insight into Jeff and the Rogue Element team’s adventures.

STKR: How do you use the FLi Over-Lander when adventuring?

Jeff: We primarily use our lights to illuminate our cam while we cook and film. They allow usable light with our cameras which is rare for a non-video specific camera light, which is great! Because of the height, they illuminate the entire camp no problem which makes cooking at night easy!

STKR: We’ve seen some of the food your team makes! It looks great… still waiting on our invite by the way

STKR: What’s your favorite feature on the FLi OV?

Jeff: The remote! Love being able to change settings at will by keeping it in my pocket. It’s great for when the kids or wife need to go potty at night and you don’t have to fish for a light, especially when in bear country!

STKR: Whenever it’s not one of the FLi’s, what’s your other go-to STKR product?

Jeff: The kick ass headlamp! That thing is money! So many great features!

STKR: Coolest places you’ve gone overlanding? (you don’t have to share your secret spots if you don’t want to!)

Jeff: Death Valley is one of our favorites but the Alpine Loop in Colorado is something else!

STKR: What inspired you and your team to create the Rogue Element page and series?

Jeff: We started all of this as a way to create films for the hunting and fishing industry but got burnt out filming that and our true passion was off-roading. We can do it year round and there’s less politics involved. Content for overlanding is endless, it’s ridiculously fun but still challenging enough for us to stay focused. There’s nothing like being out in the wilderness with great people and badass rigs. It never gets old!

STKR: What has been your favorite memory while overlanding / filming the series?

Jeff: Watching the team work together. We’ve had some crazy issues and scenarios that put us in not so great situations which forced us to dial in our talents and experiences to get out of a jam. Whether it was Christian's Power Wagon’s transmission going out in Death Valley or the earth giving way under my truck in Moab and almost rolling, seeing everyone get together and put in work was pretty awesome to watch and it made the bourbon taste that much better at camp while we laughed about it!

STKR: What’s the plan for 2024? Any trips you’re particularly looking forward to?

Jeff: We are doing more, smaller trips. The big trips kinda took a toll on us and the editing involved in those take forever. We love the small two or three day trips that are more unplanned and allow us to be more organic with filming. We have some stuff that is pretty local to us that we want to explore like Anza Borrego, Joshua Tree and some stuff out east near Reno. We will be trying our hand at the Rubicon in my Power Wagon and the Gladiator this late summer! Should be awesome!

STKR: Best overlanding/road tripping snack… GO!

Jeff: Carnivore Snax and day old cold pizza! Haha!

STKR: Favorite road trip song?

Jeff: Anything metal or good hip hop…none of this new garbage rap though…pre 2006!

STKR: Any good advice for newbies looking to get into overlanding?

Jeff: Do what makes you happy! You don’t need a big, badass ride with everything on it regardless of what some “influencer” says…you can basically get anywhere you want with a Subaru or decent 4WD! Enjoy the time you have exploring your public lands!

STKR: What about people who are getting into videography and photography – any advice for them?

Jeff: Shoot often, get familiar with light and if you’re going to post a video on YouTube or social, for the love of god, use good audio! Audio separates the men from the boys and nothing loses an audience like bad audio. You can get away with not so great footage if the audio is good and there’s somewhat of a storyline that doesn’t overuse voiceovers.
